Day 1. Velkommin till Ỉsland, welcome to Iceland!

After you fly directly to Iceland and pick up your rental car at the airport, your Iceland adventure really begins! Drive to the south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula for your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerði. The village is one of the few places in the world built directly on a geothermal area. The village is often called flower village because of the flowers grown in the greenhouses which are heated by the hot water from local springs. Depending on your arrival time, on the way to Hveragerði you can visit the renovated Blue Lagoon to relax in the geothermal warm water. Your first night here in Iceland will be special no matter what. Due to the midnight sun, it hardly gets dark here.

Day 2. The Golden Circle

Start the day with an unforgettable visit to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal area full of hot springs around Geysir. Then you drive with a view of the volcano Hekla, one of the most active and infamous volcanoes in Iceland, past numerous highlights of the south coast such as the graceful Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind), the hidden Gljúfrafoss and beautiful Skógafoss, the famous glaciers Eyjafjallajökull (where a volcanic eruption took place in 2010 that paralyzed air traffic within Europe for a while) and Mýrdalsjökull and Dyrhólaey, a cape that extends into the sea with a large hole in it. Due to the many thousands of breeding seabirds, including puffins, this cape is closed from May to June 23. You will stay in the area surrounding the picturesque town of Vik for the next two nights.

Day 3. Along the black sand beaches of the south

Today you drive along the spectacular south coast of Iceland. In clear weather you will have a long view of the infamous Hekla, one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland. Some of today’s many highlights include the Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind) and Gljúfrafoss waterfalls, the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, Dyrhólaey (a cape that extends into the sea with a large hole in it, because of the many breeding birds this cape is closed from May to June 23) and the black sand beaches around the town of Vik. Via the enormous Eldhraun lava field you travel to Kirkjubaejarklaustur, located in a green oasis on the edge of beautiful mountain formations.
 
You will be staying in Kirkjubaejarklaustur or the surrounding area.

Day 4. Vatnajökull national park and the Jökulsárlón iceberg lake

Today you continue your journey along the edge of the enormous Vatnajökull glacier, which covers approximately 8% of Iceland’s total land area. It is definitely recommended to take a boat trip on the Jökulsárlón iceberg lake. During the boat trip you can take beautiful photos of this setting, which is also appealing to the imagination of feature film directors. Then visit the Skaftafell National Park and take beautiful walks. You can even take a guided glacier walk there. Bird lovers can take a flat cart behind a tractor to the ingólfshöfði nature reserve where thousands of birds, including puffins and great skuas, breed every year. If you still have time, drive through the amazing lava fields covered with green moss to the Lakagigar crater row. This fissure volcano with a length of 25 kilometers and with about 100 so-called cinder cones erupted in 1783 and is the largest eruption that has ever occurred in Iceland. The country was buried under a layer of 30 billion tons of lava. The toxic gases released killed almost three-quarters of the country’s livestock and killed thousands of Icelanders. Evacuation of the entire country was even considered. In this fascinating landscape lies the 818 meter high crater Laki, which you can hike up for breathtaking views of the craters. 

Tonight you will be a guest in or around the town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur. located in a green oasis on the edge of beautiful mountain formations. 

Day 5. The spectacular East

Today you leave in a southerly direction along the beautifully situated Lagarflot lake. Just like Loch Ness, this lake also has its own monster: Lagarfljótsormurinn, a snake-like monster that has appeared in stories since the 14th century. The setting of this lake is spectacular: Unique rock formations and beautiful waterfalls form the backdrop to this 112 meter deep lake. If you continue your way along the lake, you will arrive in Hallormstadur at the largest deciduous forest in Iceland, planted in 1903. In a country with few trees, it is quite an experience to see a tree of 20 meters high! Beautiful hiking trails have been set out in this large forest for Iceland. One of these routes leads to the Lambafoss waterfall. Don’t forget to visit the tree museum located here. For a glimpse into Icelandic history, visit the Icelandic Wilderness Center, beautifully situated on the edge of Northern Europe’s largest wilderness. Here you will find several exhibitions that show you how hard life was in the Icelandic wilderness.

For a place with history, culture and delicious local food, make a stop at Skriduklaustur on the western shore of Lake Lagarflot. There was a monastery on this site in the 15th and 16th centuries. The current building was built by the Icelandic writer Gunnar Gunnarsson in the 1930s. Nowadays the special building serves as an educational institution and museum and you can enjoy delicious food there. You can also visit the excavations of the former monastery. With a full stomach you will head to the coast where you will spend the night in or around the harbor town of Höfn, pronounced “Hub”. This town is known as the lobster town of Iceland. You reach Höfn via, among other things, the Öxi pass, a well-maintained gravel road that literally leads you over the mountain: you descend via hairpin bends, along deep gorges with gradients of sometimes 17%, from 500 meters to sea level. Near Höfn you drive over the Almannaskard Pass. Here, in good weather, you have a fantastic view of the Vatnajökull glacier on one side and the coastal area on the other.

Day 6. Stunning waterfalls

Today you will explore the beautiful Tjörnes Peninsula. For an optional whale safari, drive to Húsavík with its picturesque harbor. Many cetaceans such as humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, fin whales and porpoises are found off the coast here. The chance of spotting a whale is estimated at 99 percent. Then you can make a stop at the Voladalstorfa lighthouse. Large colonies of puffins nest here that you can see up close! Take care as you walk to the lighthouse along the dizzying cliffs and enjoy the beautiful views of the Arctic Ocean. You continue your way to the Jökulsárgljúfur (Glacier River Gorge). The wild glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum flows here, which originates from the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. Visit the impressive Ásbyrgi gorge, one of the most beloved pearls of Icelandic nature. After this stop, the waterfalls follow each other in rapid succession. One more spectacular than the other. Such as the muddy Hafragilsfoss waterfall near the red-colored Randarhólar craters, the majestic Selfoss and the awe-inspiring Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe. 

You can see the mist of the splashing water from far away. After all this violence you continue your way to Egilsstaðir where you will stay overnight in the town or its surroundings.

Day 7. Waterfalls, whales and a "world city"

Start the day with a drive to fantastic Goðafoss. Over a width of 30 meters, the water of the Skjálfandafljót river falls 12 meters. For a whale safari you then drive to Husavik. Many cetaceans such as humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, fin whales and porpoises are found off the coast here. The chance of spotting a whale is estimated at 99 percent. You end your day in the wonderful world of the famous Lake Mývatn, where you will spend the next two nights in the region.

Day 8. Through the troll peninsula

Today you drive to Siglufjörður along one of the most beautiful coastlines in Iceland, with unique views over the North Atlantic Ocean. In the charming town, you can discover the city’s history at the award-winning herring museum. The “herring fever” temporarily transformed the small fishing village into a thriving city in the early years of the 20th century. Be sure to stop in the town of Hofsós, where you can visit the beautiful Infinity Pool and its unique optical illusion. Be sure to stop in the town of Hofsós, where you can visit the beautiful Infinity Pool and its unique optical illusion. Discover the fascinating area of ​​Skagafjörður, known for horse breeding, before continuing to Hrútafjörður. A recommended stop along the way is Vatnsdalshólar, a cluster of hills in Vatnsdalur valley. These hills are considered one of Iceland’s three innumerable natural phenomena, along with the lakes in Arnarvatnsheiði and the islands of Breidarfjord in the west. Be sure to turn off the road to the 15-meter-high bird rock Hvitserkur, which travels out of the sea like a petrified dragon or prehistoric animal. You will stay in the Laugarbakki area.

Day 9. The wonderful Westfjords

Today you first travel to Hólmavík and if you like quiet roads and even quieter places, the road to Krossnes is highly recommended. High barren mountains, beautiful waterfalls, dilapidated herring factories, a coastline full of driftwood and a rich bird life can be found along this road. Be amazed by the sheer beauty of this isolated place. Later today you will drive through an unmistakable fjord landscape. The length of the West Fjords coastline makes up more than a third of Iceland’s total coastline, while the total land area makes up only 10% of the total. Wide, U-shaped fjords that sometimes penetrate deep inland form the backdrop here. This fascinating region is not often visited by people, but it will leave a deep impression on you. Countless birds and many seals live here. You will spend the next two nights in Ísafjordur, the largest town in the West Fjords with less than 2,800 inhabitants.

Day 10. Isafjordur area

The wide fjord of Ísafjarðardjúp provides a phenomenal backdrop to the charming fishing village of Ísafjörður with colorful narrow streets and old buildings dominated by the steep slopes of Kirkjubolsfjalls mountain. The town has an unexpected vibrancy with a thriving harbour, very good restaurants, chic cafes and an annual music festival that attracts fans from all over the world. As an outdoor enthusiast, you will definitely get your money’s worth here in this remote area: mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, mountain climbing, you name it, it’s all possible in the West Fjords. There are several golf courses in the region and sea kayaking is a great way to spend the afternoon in the picturesque fjords. The Hornstrandir nature reserve is also definitely worth a visit. It is a remote area and off-limits to all motorized traffic, so the pure and wild nature is only accessible by boat and ideal for hikers and nature lovers.
 
In addition to IÍsafjörður and the surrounding area, you can also visit the towns of Bolungarvik and Suðureyri. Suðureyri offers an informative walk focusing on the town’s environmentally friendly fishing practices. During the walk you can taste gastronomic and traditional fish delicacies. Discover older fishing traditions at the traditional fishing camp Ósvör, a restored 19th-century site where locals fished at sea with simple wooden rowboats.

Day 11. Via the Dynjandi waterfall to the bird paradise Látrabjarg

You continue your journey through the impressively beautiful Westfjords. Enjoy provincial charms of the fishing village of Thingeyri along the way before arriving at a gem of a waterfall, the Dynjandi. Nowhere in Iceland will you find so many beautiful waterfalls together. The waterfall has a height of no less than 100 meters and consists of seven steps. The waterfall base offers sea views over lush valleys, making it an ideal picnic stop. After visiting this piece of natural beauty, you drive to the westernmost tip of Iceland for a real bird show. Approximately one million birds breed on the remarkable 441 meter high sea cliffs every year and you can view them up close. The puffins in particular can be approached from a short distance. But many gannets, fulmars and kittiwakes also breed here. With any luck you will see a hunting arctic fox and there is a good chance that a white-tailed eagle will fly by to surprise unobservant birds. This beautiful natural sculpture has been recognized by both Lonely Planet and National Geographic as one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world. The cliffs offer panoramic views of the beautiful beaches below during the midnight sun of summer.
 
You will spend the night in the southern part of the Westfjords.

Day 12. To Stykkisholmur

You continue your journey along the south coast of the Westfjords. You will definitely want to stop at Rauðisandur, a special beach with different colors of sand, ranging from white to yellow to red to black. Take your time here and enjoy the different atmospheres of the sea and the sand.
Depending on your schedule, you may stop to take a dip in the natural geothermal hot spring Hellulaug in the Vatnsfjörður fjord. From the warm pool you have a panoramic view of the ocean. There are no changing facilities and no entry fee, but we recommend leaving some money in the donation box as locals ensure that the pool and its surroundings are regularly cleaned and remain safe to use.
Today you have two options: you can either drive the coastal road around the fjord Breiðafjörður to the town of Stykkishólmur or take the ferry across Breiðafjörður to Stykkishólmur.
If you decide to take the coastal road, you will drive along the picturesque coast from Barðaströnd to West Iceland. In Dalir, the region of the famous Viking Eric the Red and the birthplace of his son, the great explorer Leif Eiriksson (according to the Icelanders the real discoverer of America), you can relive the time of the 10th century in the living replica museum Eiríksstaðir relive it together with modern Vikings before driving onto the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
If you choose to cross the Breiðafjörður fjord by ferry (not included in the price), you will board the Baldur ferry in the harbor of Brjánslækur. You will experience a wonderful trip of approximately 2.5 hours along many islands. Enjoy the sun on the deck and let this wonderful world pass you by. Bird lovers will certainly get their money’s worth along the way, so have your camera and binoculars at the ready! The ferry docks in the charming town of Stykkishólmur where you will stay overnight in the town or its surroundings. The eco-friendly Stykkishólmur has beautiful wooden buildings brought over from Norway in the 19th century. The town is a lovely place to take an evening stroll, and you’ll enjoy the choice of cafes and restaurants.

Day 13. Via the Snæfellsnes peninsula to Reykjavik

Travel around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula today and drive along the rugged coastline with small fishing villages around the striking Snæfellsjökull glacier. Make a stop at the beautiful columnar basalt rock formations at Arnarstapi, as well as the rocky beach of Djúpalónssandur and discover the scenic Borgarfjörður area. See the frothy Barnafoss and the Hraunfossar lava falls, where the water tumbles into the Hvitá River after traveling 46 kilometers under a lava field over a kilometer wide. Don’t miss the most productive hot spring in the world, Deildartunguhver. Today you can enjoy a unique experience in the Borgarfjörður region. You have the opportunity to go deep into a glacier with an “Into the Glacier” experience. From the town of Húsafell you will be taken by monster truck to the Langjökull glacier where you will enter the sparkling glacier tunnel and learn everything about glaciers and how they formed in a setting with a great focus on environmental conservation and education. For those interested in Viking, we recommend a stop in the town of Borganes. Just outside Borganes is the homestead of a famous hero from the Viking saga: Egill Skallagrimsson. You can learn more about him and the first Viking settlers in Iceland at the Settlement Museum in the town of Borgarnes. Continue through the Hvalfjörður fjord, a picturesque fjord where you can admire Glymur, the highest waterfall in Iceland. Finally, you travel to the capital Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world, for your last overnight stay in fantastic Iceland. Reykjavik is small and cozy but with urban allure. Reykjavik is a trendy city with many cultural sights, an exuberant nightlife, beautiful parks and interesting nature reserves surprisingly close to the city center.

Day 14. The end of a fascinating journey

 A driver of the rental car must have had a valid Dutch, Belgian or EU driving license for at least one year. The minimum age for renting a car up to category 3.3H is 20 years. For the other categories, a minimum age of 23 years applies. The main driver of the rental car must have a valid credit card, which must be shown during pick-up.

 We advise you to arrange the waiver of your deductible in advance via Trekking Trails Travels. You pay much more locally.

 If you do not return the car with a full tank of fuel, you will be charged €20 plus the costs of the missing fuel

Your stay in Iceland

In Iceland, Trekking Trails Travels works with 4 different types of accommodation so you have the freedom to select the type that suits you. With the Superior type you stay in the best possible accommodation addresses, of course in rooms with private bathrooms, in the region, with the Quality type you stay in the most comfortable standard rooms with private sanitary facilities in your room. With the Comfort type you stay in standard accommodation addresses with private sanitary facilities in your room. With the Budget type you stay in basic accommodations and share the sanitary facilities with the other guests, except for the first night. You will stay at all types of accommodations on a bed and breakfast basis. Quality is an important factor for Trekking Trails Travels. When putting together our trips, we select accommodations based on location, service and a good price/quality ratio.

Iceland travel app

During your tour in Iceland you have access to the travel app. You will have access to the app no ​​later than two weeks before the start of your trip. The app contains all kinds of useful information about numerous sights, historical hotspots and services along the way, all information about your booking, descriptions of your accommodation addresses and a detailed travel book (PDF file) in Dutch.

Additional costs per reservation number

Waiver of CDW deductible

 During your tour in Iceland, your rental car is insured as standard for damage caused to the car. This insurance is called CDW (Car Damage Waiver). There is a deductible of ISK 242,000 to ISK 399,000 (depending on the type of car you rent) for this insurance. The amount of the applicable deductible can be purchased in full for €6.75 per calendar day. If you unexpectedly cause damage to the rental car during your tour, Allianz Global Assistance (our insurer in this case) will pay you the repair costs up to the amount of your deductible. You first pay these costs yourself on site, all you have to do is submit proof of payment for the damage and the settlement will then be taken care of by Allianz Global Assistance. They will transfer the amount to you after settlement.
