Your route during this tour through Northern Norway and Sweden on a map
Your journey through Northern Norway and Sweden from day to day
Day 1. On to Northern Norway!
From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Brussels Airport or Düsseldorf International Airport (the choice is yours), you can fly to Oslo in just under two hours, where after a short transfer you will fly on to Tromsø. Your rental car will be ready for you here and you will set sail for one of the most beautiful areas in Norway, the Lyngen Alps. The road to it is already beautiful. If you were still in the flat Netherlands this morning, you are now surrounded by beautiful, high mountain formations rising steeply from the sea and mighty fjords. You take the ferry between Breivikeidet and Svensby across the fjord and then drive along a narrow road, flanked by sea and mountains to the northernmost tip of the Lyngen Alps. Keep your eyes on the road, there’s a good chance you’ll see reindeer on your first day! For the first two nights in the pure North, you will move into a sturdy Viking Cabin, a wooden holiday home with a typical Viking appearance. Your first evening in the far North is certainly special, the sun never sets here, far above the Arctic Circle!
Driving distance Tromsø Airport – Solvik: approx. 90 km
Day 2 and 3. The Lyngen Alps in Northern Norway
Waking up in the absolute silence of Northern Norway is already something special, but especially in this place! You gaze at the rugged mountain formations from the veranda of your Viking Cabin. After you have packed your backpack and put on your hiking boots, you will enter the fantastic Lyngen Alps. There are numerous walks to take. Do you want to start with an easy walk along the coast to get used to it, or do you go straight into the mountains? The choice is yours. Whatever walk you take, you will be amazed by the incredible landscapes! You will spend another night in your striking holiday home in Solvik.
Day 4. Along the fjords of Northern Norway to Swedish Lapland
Today you say goodbye to the enchanting Lyngen Alps and drive to one of the best places for hiking in Sweden, the area surrounding the Abisko National Park. The drive there is one of great beauty. In Norway you drive along the fjords and through mountain formations. From the fjord Romsbackfjorden the road goes steeply up to the border with neighboring Sweden. Along the way the landscape changes dramatically. Don’t forget to look back every now and then to enjoy the spectacular views of the fjord behind you. Arriving in the mountain village of Björkliden you will be treated to a magical view of Scandinavia’s largest mountain lake, Torneträsk. You will move into a cozy wooden bungalow for the next 3 nights, with a private sauna and patio.
Driving distance Solvik – Björkliden: approx. 265 km
Day 5 and 6. Get to know Swedish Lapland
Waking up with a view like this, who wouldn’t want that! You continue to gaze over the mountain lake Torneträsk. But the hanging, U-shaped valley “Lapporten” (the gateway to Lapland) is also a real eye-catcher. After breakfast it is time to explore the area. There are numerous (day) walks to take. For example, you can go hiking in the nearby Absiko National Park to walk part of Sweden’s most famous hiking trail, “Kungsleden” (the King’s Trail). You can take a day hike to the mighty Kärkevagge, one of the most mystical and beautiful places in the Swedish mountains. Kärkevagge, a small valley, is a unique area and is known for its beautiful rock formations that were formed during the last ice age. Be sure to take the hike over the wolf pass to the Låktatjåkko mountain station at an altitude of 1,228 metres. A real pearl in the mountain landscape, spectacularly situated between two mountain peaks. The short walk to the idyllic Silverfallet waterfall is also definitely worth it. A tip we would also like to give is to drive from Björkliden by train to Narvik, Norway. According to many, this route, full of tunnels, mountain passes and fantastic views, is one of the most beautiful train journeys in Europe. After exploring the Norwegian port town of Narvik for a few hours, take the train back to Björkliden. In the evening you can indulge in local delicacies of game and fish. It’s pure enjoyment 250 kilometers above the Arctic Circle!
Days 7 to 9. The unparalleled Lofoten in Northern Norway
After you have packed the car again, you will travel to the spectacular Lofoten. Keep your camera ready because you will see many panoramas and scenic places along the way. You will spend the next few nights in perhaps the most beautiful spot on the Lofoten in a luxurious rorbu. Over the next three days you can fully enjoy everything that makes Lofoten so special. Discover for yourself why this archipelago is considered by many to be the most beautiful archipelago in the world. You can discover the nature of the islands in many different ways. Drive around the winding roads and be amazed by the fantastic views over and over again, walk through the ubiquitous nature on the many hiking trails and go out to sea by boat or kayak to really get a good look at the fascinating landscape. Take an excursion by RIB boat to the narrow fjord Trollfjorden and see many sea eagles. The picturesque villages and the high mountains behind them will leave an indelible impression on you. Visit the Viking museum or the sea aquarium and laze on one of the many deserted beaches.
Driving distance Björkliden – Svolvær: approx. 280 km
Day 10 and 11. The stunning Vesterålen, Northern Norway
Today you drive to Fiskebol where you take the ferry to Melbu to the other side of the fjord. You have arrived at the Vesterålen archipelago! Your journey takes you to the northern part of this special archipelago. Along the way, the Vesterålen tempts you with a combination of hundreds of islands and islets, Caribbean-looking sea water, snow-white beaches, rugged high mountains, green hills, deeply carved valleys, narrow fjords, the midnight sun, fishing villages, unique flora and an unprecedentedly rich animal life. Just try not to fall in love with that! Use these two days to take beautiful walks through the high mountains or take part in organized activities such as a whale safari. The chance that you will see them is more than 98% because there are many whales (usually sperm whales) around Andenes. You will first receive an extensive tour of the whale museum and then you will go out to sea. When whales are spotted, the boat tries to get as close as possible and then you have to wait until the whale dives and the tail slowly disappears into the water. A seal safari or a puffin safari in the Bleiksøya Bird Reserve or at the Anda lighthouse are unique experiences. Hop into a sea kayak and paddle to deserted beaches. Cycling on the Vesterålen is also a fantastic experience. You will stay for two nights in a recently renovated apartment centrally located in the coastal town of Andenes.
Driving distance Svolvær – Andenes: approx. 185 km
Day 12 and 13. The sensational island of Senja, Northern Norway
You drive to the harbor in Andenes where you drive your car onto the ferry. From the deck you can already see the wonderful Senja. The island is the favorite island of the Queen of Norway, you will find out why. The landscapes are dazzlingly beautiful and nature is remarkably accessible. Take the surprisingly easy walk to the Husfjellet, which rises 635 meters above the sea and look out over the three fjords Bergsfjord, Steinfjord and Ersfjord. You can also climb to the top of the Sukkertoppen mountain or enjoy it from the Knuten viewpoint. Rent a bike and enjoy the panoramic views, waterfalls, fjords and small fishing villages. From your accommodation you can go on a fjord sightseeing trip where you have a good chance of spotting sea eagles. The many waters along the coast here are enchantingly beautiful. You can also drive the beautiful Senja National Tourist Road that winds along the coast. The route offers unforgettable views along the way. Tired from a whole day of adventure? It doesn’t matter, you can just sit down in the restaurant on the pier in the evening and be surprised by the delicious dishes! You will stay for the next two nights in a new “Northern Light apartment” on the edge of the fjord.
Driving distance Andenes – Mefjordvær: approx. 60 km
Day 14. Beautiful Sommarøya, Northern Norway
You say goodbye to Senja with a feeling of nostalgia. What a fantastic place! But your last two days are also dedicated to amazing nature. You cross the fjord by ferry from Botnhamn to Brensholmen, after which you reach the small archipelago of Sommarøya via a typical Northern Norwegian bridge. Here you will move into the Sommarøya Arctic hotel for the following night. You can take a lovely walk across the island directly from the hotel, but there are also many beautiful walks in the area. Take a boat excursion to the Hekkingen lighthouse, Norway’s oldest operating lighthouse. The island of Hekkingen has a rich bird life and exuberant flora. Or take a walk on the island and visit the local museum, “King’s park”, the handicraft shops, the art studio, the church, the harbor and of course the legendary pub “Kaillkråa”.
Driving distance Mefjordvær – Sommarøya: approx. 40 km
Day 15. End of your tour through Northern Norway and Swedish Lapland
For the last time on this trip you will wake up above the Arctic Circle. After you have gained your last impressions and had breakfast for the last time in Northern Norway, you will travel back to Tromsø Airport where you will return your rental car and check in for your return flight to Amsterdam, Bussels or Düsseldorf.
Driving distance Sommarøya – Tromsø: approx. 53 km
