Your Northern Lights trip in Iceland day by day

Day 1. Velkommin till Ỉsland, welcome to Iceland!

From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport you fly directly to Keflavik international airport where your transfer by luxury coach to Reykjavik is ready. Through the lava fields and winter landscapes you will be taken to Reykjavik in about 55 minutes where you will spend your first night. The hip and trendy city is the northernmost capital in the world and the westernmost capital in Europe. After check-in you will have time to explore the city. Visit the cozy cafés and bars in the center, the 72-meter-high Hallgrimskirkja church or the Sólfar, a striking image of a ship from the Viking era made of shiny silver steel. Stroll through the shopping streets, along the frozen lake Tjornin in the middle of the city, a popular place where many ice hockey games are played, flanked by colored houses, or pay a visit to Perlan. More than 24 million liters of hot geothermal water can be stored here. Or give your Northern Lights trip in Iceland an extra special start and step into a so-called Superjeep with which you go in search of the Northern Lights. You will spend the night in the comfortable Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura.

Day 2. Impressive natural wonders in Iceland

After a delicious, extensive Icelandic breakfast and introduction to your tour guide, you are ready for an extremely enjoyable day in South Iceland. After a brief introduction to Reykjavik, you will travel to the village of Hveragerði, one of the few villages in the world located in the middle of a geothermal area. Hveragerði is often called “The Flower Village”. This is because of the many greenhouses where flowers are grown that are fed by naturally hot water heated from nearby springs. After this it is time to admire the natural wonders of the “Golden Circle”. First you will be introduced to the impressive Gullfoss waterfall, where the water thunders down 32 meters in two steps, which are more or less at right angles to each other, into a gorge that is more than 70 meters deep, 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers long. . Your next stop is the world-famous geothermal fields of Geysir, where bubbling mud pools, colored hot springs and the 30-meter-high gushing geyser Strokkur await you. You continue your journey along the south coast of Iceland, an area that is beautiful to view in winter. When the weather is clear you have a view of Hekla, one of the most infamous volcanoes in Iceland that erupts on average once every ten years. You will stop at two of Iceland’s most striking waterfalls; the graceful 65 meter high Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind) and the impressive 60 meter high and 25 meter wide Skógafoss. You will travel along the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, to visit the mysterious black beach Reynisfjara beach. Take a short walk on the black sand and admire the extraordinary rock formations and the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Your travel day full of highlights ends in the striking town of Vik where you move into the Icelandair Hotel Vik and enjoy a tasty dinner. If  conditions are favorable, your guide will take you on a Northern Lights hunt in the vicinity of the hotel this evening or on one of the other evenings.

Day 3. The glaciers of South Iceland

After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast, you board the bus again. Sit back and relax because today you will again be presented with a lot of Iceland. You will drive through the Eldhraun, a gigantic lava field created by an eruption in the 18th century, before immersing yourself in the icy world of glaciers! You will visit the southern part of the immense Vatnajokull National Park, named after the largest glacier in Europe. The total area of this National Park covers almost 14% of Iceland, making it the largest National Park in Western Europe! You’ll drive through vast expanses of flushing sand created by glaciers as you travel further east. You will visit the famous Skaftafell area of the national park, an area of outstanding natural beauty dominated by several beautiful glaciers. One of these is Svinafellsjokull, one of the most beautiful glacial “tongues” that slowly creeps down from Vatnajokull. One of today’s highlights is the stop at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here you will be seduced with breathtaking views of the icebergs floating in the fairytale 180 meter deep glacier lagoon (make sure your camera is loaded and ready!). On the other side of the road you will be introduced to the dramatic beauty of Diamond Beach, where icebergs lie on the black sand. Your final destination today is Höfn, a fishing village located in the shadow of the Vatnajokull glacier, known as the lobster capital of Iceland. Tonight you will stay at the Hotel Höfn where you will enjoy a delicious dinner. With a bit of luck you will be outside a lot in the evening to enjoy the spectacle of the Northern Lights.

Driving distance today: approx. 285 kilometers

Day 4. The spectacular fjords of East Iceland

After waking up relaxed and having had an extensive breakfast, get ready  to enjoy some fantastic views today! Drive from Höfn over the Almannaskard Pass and stop to admire the majestic coastline. You travel through a backdrop of towering mountains that sometimes rise vertically from the sea and form the beautiful East Fjords. Have your camera ready and look out for wild reindeer in the beautiful east of Iceland, which can sometimes be seen in the area during the winter months.
You will pass a number of villages, each with their own special history and charm. One of them is the small village of Breiðdalsvík. In the village of 130 inhabitants you will visit the local microbrewery Beljandi and be offered a delicious Icelandic beer. You will meet one of the guides and get an insight into what life is like in this remote region and how such great beer is made here. You continue to the town of Egilsstaðir, the capital of East Iceland with 2,300 inhabitants. Nearby Egilsstaðir is Iceland’s largest forest and a lake said to be home to a legendary (friendly) monster. The region is known for its excellent local cuisine that you will definitely enjoy during dinner. You will spend the night at the Icelandair Hotel Herad with hopefully plenty of Northern Lights alarm.

Driving distance today: approx. 260 kilometers

Day 5. The fairytale region around Lake Mývatn

Your day starts again today with a tasty breakfast. After you have packed your suitcase, take a seat on the bus to discover a completely different part of Iceland. If you have already been deeply impressed by Iceland in recent days, today Iceland takes it even further. You  explore the empty expanse of the impressive highland desert plateau Möðrudalsöræfi; deserted and yet hauntingly beautiful in the winter snow. Along the way you will stop at the awe-inspiring Dettifoss; a roaring waterfall of 44 meters high, 100 meters wide and the largest and most powerful waterfall in Europe. Your next stop is Námaskarð where surreal boiling mud pools and vibrant colors will impress you and make you feel like you are on another planet. Mother Earth treats you to a series of natural beauty as you explore the wonderful world around the legendary Lake Mývatn. You will find, among others, the pseudocraters of Skútustaðagigar, the fairytale Höfði, the menacing black annular explosion crater Hverfell, the black lava fields of Leirhnjúkur with sulfur springs and mud pools, the underground hot springs of Grjótagjá and the salmon river Laxa. You will probably understand why this area is so popular with filmmakers, especially in winter. Tonight you will be a guest at the friendly Sel-Hotel Myvatn where your dinner will also take place. With a bit of luck, the Northern Lights will dance in the sky tonight.

Driving distance today: approx. 255 kilometers

Day 6. The north of Iceland

A new day full of impressions begins in Iceland! Start the day well with a fascinating visit to  the strange lava formations at Dimmuborgir. The name means “Dark Citadels” in Icelandic, and the lava formations certainly look like  they were built by fantasy creatures. According to local legends, Dimmuborgir is home to elves. The next stop is also of great beauty; the fascinating Goðafoss waterfall, one of the most famous symbols of North Iceland. You will also visit the old Laufas peat farm. Enjoy a taste of some traditional Icelandic farm drinks and hear stories about life in the past. You then travel to Akureyri, the colorful northern “capital” of Iceland. The town has charming buildings and a beautiful location on the Eyjafjörður. After spending some time in Akureyri, continue along the coastal roads of Akureyri and the Troll Peninsula. Enjoy the beautiful drive along steep mountains with panoramic views of the Arctic Ocean and the black sand coast. Your next stop is the beautiful fishing village of Siglufjörður with approximately 1,200 inhabitants, located on an extremely beautiful fjord of the same name. The town has some of the most beautiful wooden buildings in the country, which have been expertly restored and can be admired in their original glory. You may even recognize some of the buildings; the town was one of the filming locations for the popular Icelandic thriller series Trapped. In Siglufjörður you will visit the award-winning Herring-Era Maritime Museum. You will experience the atmosphere of the early 20th century, when Siglufjörður was transformed into a thriving city thanks to a large migration of herring. The museum takes you back to that exciting time. Continue your journey  past majestic mountains and narrow passes to Skagafjörður, considered one of the most beautiful places in Iceland and famous for horse breeding. Here in Northwest Iceland you will enjoy dinner and overnight stay. It is an ideal place for an evening walk, hopefully under the Northern Lights.

Driving distance today: approx. 235 kilometers

Day 7. Wonderful West Iceland

After breakfast you will meet perhaps the most famous inhabitants of Iceland; the Icelandic horses . This unique horse breed from Iceland has a  special fifth gait, the tolt. You will follow an interesting demonstration of the horses, after which you will travel on an extremely beautiful route to the village of Blönduós, located on the Húnaflói bay and built on either side of the mouth of the Blandaá, a 125 km long glacial river.
This part of Iceland is known for the Icelandic literary work Vatnsdæla saga. You cross the Holtavörðuheiði plateau which takes you into West Iceland. You will visit the extremely beautiful region of Borgarfjörður, which has received international recognition for its varied landscapes and legendary Viking history. In the afternoon you will arrive in the town of Borgarnes for your dinner and overnight stay at the Icelandair Hotel Hamar. An excellent place to see the Northern Lights.

Driving distance today: approx. 235 kilometers

Day 8. On to Reykjavik

Today Iceland again reveals some of its pearls to you as you are presented with some of the beautiful natural wonders of West Iceland. You first drive to Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe that produces 180 liters of water with a temperature of almost 100°C every second! Also view the lava waterfalls Hraunfossar, where the water tumbles into the Hvitá river after a journey of 46 kilometers under a lava field over a width of a kilometer. The turquoise blue water continues its way through menacing black lava formations. Not far from Hraunfossar you will visit  Barnafoss, a waterfall with a beautiful blue color and a moving legend attached to it. You travel through the approximately 30 kilometer long, 5 kilometer wide and picturesque mountain-lined fjord Hvalfjörður to Lake Þingvallavatn  and the Thingvellir National Park. The world’s oldest surviving parliamentary government was founded at this UNESCO heritage site in the 10th century. It is also the place where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. You will have the unusual experience of walking between two continents! Finally, you return to Reykjavik, where you say goodbye to your tour guide and can spend the evening as you wish. You will spend the night in Reykjavik at the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura. If desired, you can book an extra night to explore Reykjavik in more detail.

Driving distance today: approx. 205 kilometers

Day 9. End of an amazing Northern Lights trip in Iceland
