Your tour of Iceland on a map

Your tour in Iceland from day to day

Day 1. Velkommin till Ỉsland, welcome to Iceland!

Some highlights from today:

* The Blue Lagoon * Hveragerði * Hveragerði Hotspot Area

After you fly directly to Iceland and pick up your rental car at the airport, your Iceland adventure really begins! Drive to the south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula for your first overnight stay in the charming village of Hveragerði. The village is one of the few places in the world built directly on a geothermal area. The village is often called flower village because of the flowers grown in the greenhouses which are heated by the hot water from local springs. Depending on your arrival time, on the way to Hveragerði you can visit the renovated Blue Lagoon to relax in the geothermal warm water. Your first night here in Iceland will be special no matter what. Due to the midnight sun, it hardly gets dark here.

Driving distance: Keflavik International Airport – Hveragerði approx. 105 km | 1.30 hrs. to ride

Day 2. The Golden Circle

Some highlights from today:

* boiling geysers * the golden waterfall * black sand beaches * bird cliffs

Start the day with an unforgettable visit to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal area full of hot springs around Geysir. Then you drive with a view of the volcano Hekla, one of the most active and infamous volcanoes in Iceland, past numerous highlights of the south coast such as the graceful Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind), the hidden Gljúfrafoss and beautiful Skógafoss, the famous glaciers Eyjafjallajökull (where a volcanic eruption took place in 2010 that paralyzed air traffic within Europe for a while) and Mýrdalsjökull and Dyrhólaey, a cape that extends into the sea with a large hole in it. Due to the many thousands of breeding seabirds, including puffins, this cape is closed from May to June 23. You will stay in the area surrounding the picturesque town of Vik for the next two nights.

Driving distance Hveragerði – Vik approx. 330 km | 5 hrs. to ride

Day 3. Through the north of Iceland

Some highlights from today:
* picturesque waterfalls * the most powerful hot spring in the world * Icelandic horses

In the Borgarfjörður region, see the foamy Barnafoss waterfall and the Hraunfossar lava falls, where the water tumbles into the Hvitá river after a 46-kilometer journey under a lava field over a kilometer wide. Don’t miss the most productive hot spring in the world, Deildartunguhver. The source supplies about 200 liters of boiling water per second!
Follow  in the footsteps of medieval leader and Saga author Snorri Sturluson at his home in Reykholt. Nearby is the friendly Sturlureykir horse farm, where you can tour the farm, meet Icelandic horses and enjoy a short introduction to the breed. We recommend trying the farm’s excellent steam-baked rye bread at their cafe – they bake it in their farm’s hot spring! You can also take a horse riding tour through the beautiful landscape.
You continue north and pass Húnaflói Bay, a great area for seal spotting. If you want to know more about seals, we recommend a visit to the Seal Center in Hvammstangi. You can learn more about these special marine mammals and also book a guided seal safari. Just above the Icelandic Seal Center is a charming seafood restaurant with great views of the fjord and a tasty local menu.
The landscape changes to towering mountains and fertile valleys as you enter the Skagafjörður area, an area known for horse breeding and some of Iceland’s best-preserved historic buildings. Some of these are located in Glaumbær (the Skagafjörður Heritage Museum), where you can visit an 18th-century peat farm and two charming 19th-century wooden houses.
You then travel through beautiful landscapes with sometimes high mountains to the northern town of Akureyri, which with 17,000 inhabitants is a true metropolis and is called the capital of the North. Explore the town and visit the church, the many museums or the thermally heated swimming pool. You will stay overnight in or around the town of Akureyri.

Driving distance Borgarfjörður – Akureyri approx. 280 km | 4 hrs. to ride

Day 4. Waterfalls, whales and a "world city"

Some highlights from today:
* gods waterfall * the gentle giants of the ocean * the capital of North Iceland

Start the day with a drive to fantastic Goðafoss. Over a width of 30 meters, the water of the Skjálfandafljót river falls 12 meters. For a whale safari you then drive to Husavik. Many cetaceans such as humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, fin whales and porpoises are found off the coast here. The chance of spotting a whale is estimated at 99 percent. You end your day in the wonderful world of the famous Lake Mývatn, where you will spend the next two nights in the region.

Driving distance: Akureyri – Husavik – Mývatni approx. 150 km | 2 hrs. to ride

Day 5. The enchanting world around Lake Mývatn

Some highlights from today:
* volcanic wonders * colorful thermal areas * natural pools

Explore the paradisiacal surroundings of the lake today. Take (short) walks past the pseudocraters of Skútustaðagigar, through the fairytale Höfði, the high jagged volcanic pillars at Dimmuborgir, the menacing black annular explosion crater Hverfell, the black lava fields of Leirhnjúkur with sulfur springs and mud pools and to the underground hot springs of Grjótagjá. In addition to all this natural violence, Myvatn is a paradise for bird watchers. The lake is home to numerous water birds such as Icelandic goldeneyes and black scoters. If you want to relax, you can visit the natural thermal baths of Myvatn Nature Baths, just outside Myvatn. You will stay another night in this paradisiacal environment.

You will spend another night in the region around Lake Mývatn.

Day 6. Stunning waterfalls

Some highlights from today:

* glacier-formed gorge * whales * the most powerful waterfall in Europe

Today you will explore the beautiful Tjörnes Peninsula. For an optional whale safari, drive to Húsavík with its picturesque harbor. Many cetaceans such as humpback whales, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, fin whales and porpoises are found off the coast here. The chance of spotting a whale is estimated at 99 percent. Then you can make a stop at the Voladalstorfa lighthouse. Large colonies of puffins nest here that you can see up close! Take care as you walk to the lighthouse along the dizzying cliffs and enjoy the beautiful views of the Arctic Ocean. You continue your way to the Jökulsárgljúfur (Glacier River Gorge). The wild glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum flows here, which originates from the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. Visit the impressive Ásbyrgi gorge, one of the most beloved pearls of Icelandic nature. After this stop, the waterfalls follow each other in rapid succession. One more spectacular than the other. Such as the muddy Hafragilsfoss waterfall near the red-colored Randarhólar craters, the majestic Selfoss and the awe-inspiring Dettifoss, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

You can see the mist of the splashing water from far away. After all this violence you continue your way to Egilsstaðir where you will stay overnight in the town or its surroundings.

Driving distance today: approx. 320 km

Day 7. The spectacular East

Some highlights from today:

* impressive views of the fjords * charming fishing villages * ancient rock formations * Wilderness Center

Today you leave in a southerly direction along the beautifully situated Lagarflot lake. Just like Loch Ness, this lake also has its own monster: Lagarfljótsormurinn, a snake-like monster that has appeared in stories since the 14th century. The setting of this lake is spectacular: Unique rock formations and beautiful waterfalls form the backdrop to this 112 meter deep lake. If you continue your way along the lake, you will arrive in Hallormstadur at the largest deciduous forest in Iceland, planted in 1903. In a country with few trees, it is quite an experience to see a tree of 20 meters high! Beautiful hiking trails have been set out in this large forest for Iceland. One of these routes leads to the Lambafoss waterfall. Don’t forget to visit the tree museum located here. For a glimpse into Icelandic history, visit the Icelandic Wilderness Center, beautifully situated on the edge of Northern Europe’s largest wilderness. Here you will find several exhibitions that show you how hard life was in the Icelandic wilderness.

For a place with history, culture and delicious local food, make a stop at Skriduklaustur on the western shore of Lake Lagarflot. There was a monastery on this site in the 15th and 16th centuries. The current building was built by the Icelandic writer Gunnar Gunnarsson in the 1930s. Nowadays the special building serves as an educational institution and museum and you can enjoy delicious food there. You can also visit the excavations of the former monastery. With a full stomach you will head to the coast where you will spend the night in or around the harbor town of Höfn, pronounced “Hub”. This town is known as the lobster town of Iceland. You reach Höfn via, among other things, the Öxi pass, a well-maintained gravel road that literally leads you over the mountain: you descend via hairpin bends, along deep gorges with gradients of sometimes 17%, from 500 meters to sea level. Near Höfn you drive over the Almannaskard Pass. Here, in good weather, you have a fantastic view of the Vatnajökull glacier on one side and the coastal area on the other.

Driving distance: approx. 300 km

Day 8. Vatnajökull national park and the Jökulsárlón iceberg lake

Some highlights from today:

* Europe’s largest glacier * glacier lagoon * green oasis created by glaciers

Today you continue your journey along the edge of the enormous Vatnajökull glacier, which covers approximately 8% of Iceland’s total land area. It is definitely recommended to take a boat trip on the Jökulsárlón iceberg lake. During the boat trip you can take beautiful photos of this setting, which is also appealing to the imagination of feature film directors. Then visit the Skaftafell National Park and take beautiful walks. You can even take a guided glacier walk there. Bird lovers can take a flat cart behind a tractor to the ingólfshöfði nature reserve where thousands of birds, including puffins and great skuas, breed every year. If you still have time, drive through the amazing lava fields covered with green moss to the Lakagigar crater row. This fissure volcano with a length of 25 kilometers and with about 100 so-called cinder cones erupted in 1783 and is the largest eruption that has ever occurred in Iceland. The country was buried under a layer of 30 billion tons of lava. The toxic gases released killed almost three-quarters of the country’s livestock and killed thousands of Icelanders. Evacuation of the entire country was even considered. In this fascinating landscape lies the 818 meter high crater Laki, which you can hike up for breathtaking views of the craters.

Tonight you will be a guest in or around the town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur. located in a green oasis on the edge of beautiful mountain formations.

Day 9. From one surprise to another

Some highlights from today:
* colored mountain formations * lava fields * hot springs * rugged highlands

Today the journey continues on the Fjallabaksleid, part of the old Landmannalaugur route. This road is only suitable for 4WD vehicles with a minimum class of 5.0. On the way to Landmannalaugur you will have to cross a river several times with your car without a bridge. Be sure to make a stop at the impressive Eldgjá fire gorge and admire the double waterfall Ófærufoss. Landmannalaugur is a beautiful area where you can enjoy the yellow, red, brown and gray-green colored rhyolite mountains. There are several well-marked walks. Don’t forget to take a photo of yourself enjoying the warm water of the stream in Landmannalaugar! Later in the day (if the weather is nice) you can enjoy the view of the 1491 meter high volcano Hekla. This infamous volcano is Iceland’s most active volcano. Before you drive back to Reykjavik you should definitely stop in the Thorsardalur valley. A beautiful, green valley, formed by the various eruptions of the Hekla. In this enchanting setting you can take beautiful, short walks to beautiful waterfalls such as Hjálparfoss, Gjáin and Háifoss.

If you have a 2WD rental car, continue to follow the ring road instead of the route described above. In that case you will drive along the spectacular south coast. Via the enormous Eldhraun lava field you travel to black sand beaches around the town of Vik. You continue your way past Dyrhólaey, a cape that extends into the sea with a large hole in it, because of the many breeding birds this cape is closed from May to June 23, the glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. Although this trip has many highlights, there are a few more today: the waterfalls Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind) and Gljúfrafoss are definitely worth it. As you continue your way to Reykjavik, this route also offers views of the infamous Hekla, one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland, in clear weather.

Driving distance Kirkjubaejarklaustur – Reykjavik approx. 215 km | 3 hrs. to ride

Day 10. The end of a fascinating journey

After you have sat down for breakfast for the last time, you drive your rental car back to the airport to check in for your flight home. A fantastic total experience of Iceland has come to an end!

Driving distance: Reykjavik – Keflavik International Airport approx. 50 km | 40 minutes drive

105 km | 1.30 hrs. to ride

Day 5.
