Your tour of Iceland on a map

Day 1. Velkommin till Ỉsland, welcome to Iceland!

After a comfortable, direct flight of approximately 3 hours from Schiphol Airport you land in wintery Iceland. After you have picked up your rental car at the airport, you will drive to Reykjavik, the northernmost capital in the world and the westernmost capital in Europe. You have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore the trendy city. You might be lucky and see the magical Northern Lights color the sky on your first evening!

Driving distance: Keflavik airport – Reykjavik approx. 50 km | 40 minutes drive

Day 2. A day full of natural spectacle in Iceland

Start the day with an unforgettable visit to the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal area full of hot springs around Geysir. Then you drive with a view of the Hekla volcano, one of the most active and infamous volcanoes in Iceland, past numerous waterfalls such as the graceful Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind), the hidden Gljúfrafoss and the beautiful Skógafoss. The famous glaciers Eyjafjallajökull (where a volcanic eruption took place in 2010 that paralyzed air traffic within Europe for a while) and the Mýrdalsjökull and Dyrhólaey, a cape that extends into the sea with a large hole in it, lead you to your final destination today, the town of Vik. You will stay here for the next two nights. Do you want to experience something special? Then take a snowmobile safari on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

Driving distance: Reykjavik- Vik approx. 330 km | 5 hrs. to ride

Day 3. Skaftafell and the Jökulsárlón iceberg lake

Along the edge of the enormous Vatnajökull glacier, which covers about 8% of Iceland’s total land area, you drive to the iceberg lake Jökulsárlón to be amazed by the contours of the icebergs that slowly float towards the sea. Bring your camera because you can take beautiful pictures with it. Be sure to visit the beautiful Skaftafell National Park, located between two glaciers, and take beautiful nature walks to, among others, the iconic Svartifoss waterfall. You can even take a guided glacier walk there. Then you return to Vik.

Driving distance today: approx. 390 km | 5 hrs. to ride

Day 4. Þingvellir and Borgarfjörður

Today drive to Þingvellir National Park, the place where the Eurasian and American plates are pushed apart. The park is of serene beauty, houses the old parliament of Iceland and is located in an astonishing volcanic landscape on the edge of Iceland’s largest lake. Then you drive to picturesque Borgarfjörður. View the foamy Barnafoss and the Hraunfossar lava falls, where the water tumbles into the Hvitá river after a journey of 46 kilometers under a lava field over a kilometer wide. Don’t miss the most productive hot spring in the world, Deildartunguhver. The source supplies about 200 liters of boiling water per second! In short, today you will again be short of eyes. You will stay in Borgarfjörður for the next two nights.

Driving distance: Vik – Borgarfjörður approx. 335 km | 4.30 am to ride

Day 5. The magic of Snæfellsnes

Today you will discover the countless natural wonders of Snæfellsnes, Iceland’s largest peninsula. In fact, Snæfellsnes is almost a miniature representation of the entire country. In addition to the impressive Snæfellsjökull glacier, you will find white and black sand beaches, spectacular mountains and volcanic craters. Optionally, you can join an interesting excursion into the interior of the glacier today.

Driving distance today: approx. 330 km | 4.30 am to ride

Day 6. On to Reykjavik

Today, explore the Reykjanes Peninsula, visit the lunar landscapes of Lake Kleifarvatn and the Krýsuvík geothermal area with its bubbling mud pools and smoking earth. Visit the fishing village of Grindavik and the famous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing dip in the pleasant warm geothermal water rich in minerals that are good for your skin. Your journey ends today in Reykjavik. Small and cozy but with urban allure. Reykjavik is a trendy city with many cultural sights, an exuberant nightlife, beautiful parks and interesting nature reserves surprisingly close to the city center. Do you like whale watching? Then you can optionally take a boat to spot these impressive animals.

Driving distance: Borgarfjörður – Reykjavik approx. 170 km | 2.15 p.m. to ride

Day 7. End of an exciting introduction to Iceland

For the last time this trip, you will enjoy breakfast after which you will drive to Keflavik Airport and check in for your direct flight home. An amazing adventure in Iceland has come to an end.

The program may be deviated from due to organizational or weather conditions.

Your stay during your winter trip to Iceland

Trekking Trails Travels offers two different categories of accommodation addresses during this tour of Iceland. This way you can create a suitable Iceland experience in your own style.
We try to let you spend the night in the most favorable places in the most beautiful areas as much as possible. But in the popular regions of Iceland, the demand for places to stay is many times greater than the supply. As a result, you may sometimes spend the night a little further away from certain sights. In sparsely populated Iceland, the places to stay are not always well distributed, so you will drive more on some days than on others.

Quality

During your tour at accommodation addresses in the Quality category, you will stay in the most comfortable places that each region has to offer. You will stay in hotels and guesthouses of excellent quality with private sanitary facilities in your room. During your last night in Reykjavik you will stay in a four-star hotel.

Comfort

During our comfort tours in Iceland you travel without worries, staying in accommodations with private facilities that fit within your budget. You will stay in a combination of standard hotels, farms and guesthouses. Your last night you will be a guest in a three-star hotel in Reykjavik.

Your flights to Iceland

Your flights are operated by the renowned airline Icelandair. The above rates are based on the lowest priced flight class. Most airlines have different classes of carriage. Often there is only a price difference between different classes and no difference in leg space and/or care. After receiving your reservation request, we will check the availability of the flight class. If the desired flight class is no longer available, we will contact you immediately for consultation. You can then book a higher flight class for a surcharge or we will look for a different departure date.
